Dunedin Club history.

The Dunedin Fanciers Club held its first show in 1880. The club members included breeders of dogs, cats, poultry & birds and arranged one show each year for all of these animals and birds in conjunction with the winter show held in Dunedin.  They also arranged some spring shows for various breeds.

From 1880, the winter shows were held every year until 1962, when the club went into recess, citing lack of members.

It is interesting to note that up until 1962 there were three poultry club's in the Dunedin city area, namely the Taieri, Kaikorai and the Dunedin Fanciers Club.

Unfortunately the Kaikorai Club was wound up in 1961 or 1962 and last year the Taieri Club went into recess.

In 1976 Ron Hammer brought together some enthusiastic folks, who at a meeting decided to form the Dunedin Poultry Pigeon & Cage Bird Club. Their 1st show was planned for and held in 1977 in the Agricultural Hall in Crawford Street Dunedin.

This hall was part of the same venue used for the old A & P Winter shows. Since this 1977 show, the Dunedin club has held shows every year either at the Agricultural Hall, the Maori Hill Hall, a pavilion in the Tahuna Park Otago A & P Society complex and to our present day venue at Forrester Park.  The current number of committee members is 15.

The club is lucky to be well supported by many breeders from and outside of Otago at our shows who sell & purchase birds and provide competition that helps the conservation and wellbeing of all pure bred domesticated poultry, pigeons and cage birds.
